Service Learning at UMass Lowell
Building the Future with College Writing + Service Learning
The Impact of Service Learning on First Year College Writing Students
About Our Programs
Where education meets community.
Here at UMass Lowell, first year college students are given the opportunity to supplement mandatory college writing courses with service learning. Service learning is defined as;
“A credit-bearing, educational experience in which students participate in an organized service activity that meets identified community needs and reflect on the service activity in such a way as to gain further understanding of course content, a broader appreciation of the discipline, and an enhanced sense of civic responsibility.” (Bringle & Hatcher, 1995).
Currently, there are 2 first year service learning courses that take place during the Fall and Spring semesters.
The courses we offer partner with other schools located in Lowell, and aim to create a symbiotic relationship in which the college students and children of our community are able to learn and grow together.
"It has allowed me to realize that even though I am only here for college, I can make a bigger impact on the city that is my home for now. I have the ability to change and help people here and do something to a place
that isn't officially my own and that is pretty fantastic."

“I have had the great opportunity to be able to apply my reading and writing skills in every day life and help young students grow a passion for reading and writing. Having my [literacy] buddy look up to me as a role model in her life was a feeling I will never forget. It truly showed
me the impact I could have on someone's life and that has helped influence me to be positive and encourage others to
do their best here at UML.”
